A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE MRS. REBECCA JENKINS SMALLS MIDDLETON OF EUTAWVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA ON THE REMARKABLE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY AND TO WISH HER CONTINUED GOOD HEALTH AND MUCH HAPPINESS IN THE YEARS TO COME.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are very pleased to learn that Mrs. Rebecca Jenkins Smalls Middleton will be celebrating her one hundredth birthday on December 15, 2002; and

Whereas, birthdays are joyous occasions to be shared with one's family and friends, and the members of the General Assembly are honored to recognize this very special day on which Mrs. Middleton will celebrate one hundred years of a full and wonderful life; and

Whereas, Mrs. Middleton was born on December 15, 1902, just after the dawning of the twentieth century, and as this century has brought incredible changes and developments to South Carolina, Rebecca Middleton has been there to witness it all; and

Whereas, Rebecca Middleton was born in Eutawville, South where she has made her home these past one hundred years; she was born to the late Tommy and Mary Jenkins and has one surviving sibling, Mr. Lawton "Golden" Jenkins; and

Whereas, she was married to the late Mr. Robert Smalls, then to the late Mr. Willie Middleton, and she is the proud mother of five children Mrs. Mary Johnson, Mr. Lucius Smalls, Mrs. Mattie Gilliard, Mr. Edward Middleton, and the late Mrs. Anna Bell Worrel. She has nineteen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; she is the true matriarch of this large and loving family and is beloved by all; and

Whereas, Rebecca Middleton has also been a loyal and faithful member of St. James Baptist Church in Eutawville her entire life, where she has served as Treasurer of the Sunday School, President of the Christian Aide Society, Pool Mother, and now as a mother of the church; and

Whereas, the life of Rebecca Jenkins Smalls Middleton is admired and known for her devotion to family, hard work, and service to others. She is the backbone of her family and a beacon of strength and dignity in the community, greatly respected and beloved by all who know her. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, wish to recognize Rebecca Jenkins Smalls Middleton of Eutawville, South Carolina on the remarkable occasion of her one hundredth birthday and wish her continued good health and much happiness in the years to come.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Rebecca Jenkins Smalls Middleton.
