A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND, CONGRATULATE, AND HONOR MARION THEODORE DUDLEY, OF HANAHAN, FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AND PUBLIC SERVICE IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY DURING AND AFTER WORLD WAR II, AND AS A VOCATIONAL SCHOOL TEACHER, MEMBER OF THE HANAHAN CITY COUNCIL AND MAYOR OF THE CITY OF HANAHAN, AND TO WISH HIM AND HIS FAMILY THE VERY BEST OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS, AND EVERY SUCCESS IN ALL OF THEIR FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Marion Theodore Dudley was born on April 24, 1923, in Summerville, South Carolina, the son of Agnes and James Dudley; and

Whereas, Marion Theodore Dudley attended school and was educated at James Simons Elementary School, Charleston, and the Murray Vocation School, took courses at the University of South Carolina and Clemson University, and was further educated by completing electrical courses and programs at the Coyne Electrical School, Chicago, Illinois, and the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and

Whereas, while attending elementary and the Murray Vocation School, Marion Theodore Dudley worked to help support his mother and father, four brothers, and five sisters. He worked at odd jobs after school whenever he could, as a delivery boy for a florist, selling and delivering eggs to customers, and selling peanuts at football games. The money earned was dutifully turned over to his mother and father to aid with supporting the family. Later he worked after school at the Charleston Electric Company, and later at a Western Auto Store; and

Whereas, about the time the United States involvement in World War II began, Marion Theodore Dudley became an apprentice in the electrical department at the Charleston Naval Yard. He then joined the Navy and served honorably during World War II and for some three and one-half years thereafter until he was discharged; and

Whereas, following his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Dudley moved his family to Columbia and worked at the Area Vocational School teaching heating and air conditioning. In his spare time he served as an umpire for the high schools in the Columbia area; and

Whereas, after moving his family back to Charleston, Marion Theodore Dudley entered the business world working for the Noland Company, a wholesale plumbing and air conditioning company. He worked for the Noland Company for twenty-three years. Again, in his spare time he taught heating and air conditioning for about three years at the new Charleston Vocation School; and

Whereas, Mr. Dudley was elected to the Hanahan City Council in 1975 and served as a council member until 1981. He was elected mayor of Hanahan in 1981 and served in that capacity until 1989. During his tenure as council member and mayor, the City of Hanahan prospered and the then Mayor Dudley was ever present for numerous ribbon cuttings to welcome new businesses, industries, recreational facilities, parks, and playgrounds to Hanahan; and

Whereas, Mr. Dudley is a lifetime member of the Masons and Carolina Lodge # 375, and is a hard working member and president of the Hanahan High School Booster Club, and the Elks Club. He is a member of the Highland Park Baptist Church, where he has faithfully served his Lord and his church since September 17, 1973, as a deacon, Sunday school teacher, and as a member of the Finance Committee and the Benevolence Committee; and

Whereas, Mr. Dudley was married to Bonnie H. Dudley on November 9, 1943. They are the loving and proud parents of four sons, Marion, Jr., Richard, Donald, and Mark, and grandparents of two grandchildren, Scott and Mike. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
