A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE ALVIN BUTLER II ON RECEIVING A YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD PRESENTED TO HIM AT THE SUMTER BRANCH OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE FREEDOM FUND AWARDS BANQUET ON NOVEMBER 2, 2002, COMMEND HIM ON HIS HARD WORK AND DEDICATION IN PURSUIT OF HIS EDUCATIONAL ASPIRATIONS, AND WISH HIM EVERY SUCCESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Alvin Butler II is a senior at Wilson Hall and has attended the school since the fifth grade. He scored a perfect sixteen hundred on the SAT on his first attempt as a junior. Mr. Butler has many other academic achievements including a National Merit Commended Student. He is one of the top fifteen hundred Black Americans in the nation based on PSAT scores, a National Achievement Scholar Semifinalist, and he is in the top five percent of seniors in the nation based of PSAT scores; and

Whereas, Alvin Butler has completed nine Advanced Placement courses and is eligible for over thirty hours of college credit. He scored first place in the University of South Carolina-Sumter Math and Science contest and first place in the Central Carolina Technical College Math Meet. Mr. Butler also has a 4.0 grade point average in each semester in high school; and

Whereas, along with his academic accomplishments, Mr. Butler is involved with extracurricular activities. He plays varsity football, has been named the WLTX-TV Player of the Week, and is second in the state in quarterback sacks. He is also a member of the varsity track team; and

Whereas, apart from his academic and athletic accomplishments, Mr. Butler was a recreational supervisor at a youth center in Gainesville, Florida last summer. He serves as a peer tutor for another student every week, and meets with a first grade student at least once a week as a Baron Mentor; and

Whereas, he enjoys playing the piano, chess, video games, and reading. He plans to major in chemical engineering in college and would like to play intercollegiate football. He is currently considering the University of Florida, Furman, South Carolina, Georgia Tech, and Stanford as possible universities that he would like to attend; and

Whereas, Alvin Butler has received tremendous support from his family. His parents are Avis and Alvin Butler, Sr. He has two sisters, Mikaela and Destiny, and a brother, Rayshan. He attends Living Victory Church in Orangeburg along with his family; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to honor Alvin Butler II for his many outstanding achievements in such a short time. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Alvin Butler II of Sumter on receiving a Youth Achievement Award at the Sumter Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Freedom Fund Awards Banquet on November 8, 2002, commend him on his hard work and dedication in pursuit of his educational aspirations, and wish him every success in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Alvin Butler II of Sumter.
