TO RECOGNIZE THE EXTREME SKILLS AND DETERMINATION OF MR. JAKE HOBGOOD OF WINNSBORO AND TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO MR. HOBGOOD ON HIS MANY RACING ACHIEVEMENTS, INCLUDING HIS MOST RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENT OF RECEIVING THE GOODYEAR TIRE AWARD FOR THE NASCAR GOODY'S DASH SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly take great pleasure in recognizing and honoring the special talents of citizens of this State; and

Whereas, NASCAR drivers possess the characteristics needed to succeed on the racetrack and in life; and

Whereas, learning from the winning experiences of his father, NASCAR driver Will Hobgood, and with great dedication, Mr. Jake Hobgood of Winnsboro has become one of the most decorated drivers in the history of the Goody's Dash Series; and

Whereas, he made his racing debut on a dirt track in 1992, and by the next year Mr. Hobgood was gaining the respect of his fans by finishing in the top five in several races and taking the winning position in one; and

Whereas, Mr. Hobgood's first full season with NASCAR was in 1997, and during that season he placed fifth in Championship Series Points; and

Whereas, in 2001, Mr. Hobgood gained more local and national recognition by becoming the Bud Pole Award Winner with four pole positions and placing fourth in the Championship Series Points; and

Whereas, 2002 proved to be Mr. Hobgood's most successful racing year yet as he found his way to the winner's circle many times, including the Piggly Wiggly 150 at Myrtle Beach Speedway, the Aucock Auto Auction 150 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, and the 700 WLW 150 at Kentucky Speedway; and

Whereas, in that same year, Mr. Hobgood reached his ultimate career goal by receiving the Goodyear Tire Award for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series Championship; and

Whereas, Mr. Hobgood and his father, Will, are only the fifth father-son team to win the Championship Title in NASCAR history and only the second to win the title in the Goody's Dash Series. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, wish to recognize the extreme skills and determination of Mr. Jake Hobgood of Winnsboro and wish to extend their congratulations to Mr. Hobgood on his many racing achievements, including his most recent accomplishment of receiving the Goodyear Tire Award for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series Championship.
