A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE DR. ROMANDO JAMES OF CLEMSON FOR BEING SELECTED AS A 2003 JEFFERSON AWARD RECIPIENT BY WYFF TELEVISION STATION IN GREENVILLE, TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY SERVICE AND INVOLVEMENT WITH YOUNG PEOPLE, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Dr. Romando James, a Clemson University professor, was selected from a pool of seventy-five candidates for the Jefferson Award by WYFF Television Station in Greenville, for his community work with underprivileged African-American children, the Department of Juvenile Justice, and inmates; and

Whereas, Dr. James created a program called Common Sense, which is designed to help people help themselves through housing improvement and provisions of food, clothing, and shelter; and

Whereas, the 4-H Pride program, another group in which Dr. James is actively involved, is based on the 4-H criteria of community involvement, academic skills, writing skills, public speaking, and debating. The participants learn to develop the qualities of perseverance, respect, integrity, determination, and enthusiasm; and

Whereas, the Jefferson Award recognizes community leaders, volunteers, and unsung heroes who are making a difference across WYFF-TV's service area; and

Whereas, nationally, the Jefferson Awards are presented by the American Institute for Public Service, established by the late Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard; and

Whereas, Dr. James won a bronze medallion featuring a replica of the Seal of the United States and signed by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Senator Robert Taft, Jr.; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are proud to honor Dr. Romando James on being awarded the Jefferson Award for his many contributions to his community and work with young people. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Romando James of Clemson for being selected as a 2003 Jefferson Award recipient by WYFF Television Station in Greenville, commend him for his outstanding community service and involvement with young people, and wish him much success in all of his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. James Romando of Clemson.
