VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
JOINING THE MANY FANS AND FRIENDS OF SKIPP PEARSON OF RICHLAND COUNTY IN CONGRATULATING HIM ON HIS SELECTION AS WINNER OF THE 2003 ELIZABETH O'NEILL VERNER AWARD IN RECOGNITION OF HIS CONSUMMATE SKILL IN PLAYING THE JAZZ SAXOPHONE AND SHARING HIS MASTERY WITH OTHERS.
Whereas, saxophonist and vocalist Skipp Pearson was honored in May, 2003, as a recipient of this state's most prestigious arts award, the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award, presented annually by the South Carolina Arts Commission; and
Whereas, this master of jazz has had a long career playing and teaching the music he loves from his first lessons at age twelve; high school gigs on television and at dances and clubs; performances in England and the West Coast of the United States; and finally settling in the D.C. area where he played with his various bands and as backup to music greats such as Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Patti LaBelle; and
Whereas, he came home to his roots in Orangeburg County to earn his college degree at Claflin University, and began a twenty-four-year career as a music educator and band director in Bamberg and Clarendon County Schools; and
Whereas, the bands of this Jazz Hall of Fame member are recognized by generations of jazz lovers -- The Tetrachords, The Exotics, and Jazzology; and
Whereas, he continues to pass on his love and knowledge and skill, hosting jazz workshops, showcases, and concerts, in addition to wowing appreciative audiences at private functions; and
Whereas, the State of South Carolina is proud to claim Skipp Pearson as a distinguished native son in recognition of his extraordinary career as a teacher, professional jazz artist, and mentor to other aspiring musicians of all levels. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, join the many fans and friends of Skipp Pearson of Richland County in congratulating him on his selection as winner of the 2003 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award in recognition of his consummate skill in playing the jazz saxophone and sharing his mastery with others.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Skipp Pearson.
