A HOUSE RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE BIENNIAL REUNION OF THE "REESE, REEVES, ROSE" FAMILY IN COLUMBIA IN CELEBRATION AND HONOR OF THEIR ROOTS ESTABLISHED IN THE ARTHURTOWN AND LITTLE CAMDEN AREAS TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO.

Whereas, since 1970, more than one hundred members of the "Reese, Reeves, Rose" family have gathered in Columbia every two years to celebrate their history; and

Whereas, that history began in the 1800's when the family resettled in the Arthurtown and Little Camden areas on the outskirts of Columbia after leaving the Reese plantation near Sumter; and

Whereas, they brought with them the skills of cooks, seamstresses, farmers, carpenters, brickmasons, and builders, and those skills were passed down to descendants; and

Whereas, John Reese, became a master brickmason and along with his brother James Reese, a self-taught carpenter and Jack-of-all skills, built his own brick home over fifty years ago; and

Whereas, the family home still stands today next to Zion Pilgrim Baptist Church in Arthurtown; and

Whereas, the family matriarch, Mrs. Amy Parker, wisely invested in real estate in and around Columbia and Newberry, allowing her to provide homes for her sisters, brothers, and cousins and kept the family stable, close, and secure; and

Whereas, she and her sister, Mrs. Susan Anderson, are responsible for sending a number of the younger descendants to college when it was not popular for blacks to go to college; and many of those descendants and their children went on to become bankers, teachers, lawyers, firemen, policemen, newscasters, and nurses; and

Whereas, though a number of descendants still reside in Columbia, the Reese, Reeves, Rose family lives all over the United States now, but will always call Columbia, South Carolina "home": the place that made them who they are today. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That members of the House of Representatives hereby recognize the biennial reunion of the "Reese, Reeves, Rose" family in Columbia, in celebration and honor of their roots established in the Arthurtown and Little Camden areas two hundred years ago.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Reese, Reeves, Rose family.
