A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE TOWN OF IRMO ON THE OCCASION OF THE THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE IRMO OKRA STRUT FESTIVAL AND TO COMMEND THE IRMO OKRA STRUT FESTIVAL COMMISSION FOR THEIR WONDERFUL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the Irmo-Lake Murray Woman's Club founded the Irmo Okra Strut Festival in 1973; and

Whereas, in 1980, the Town of Irmo took over the ownership and full responsibility for production of the annual Okra Strut Festival; and

Whereas, in the past seventeen years, the festival was celebrated in many different locations. In 1988, the festival moved to Lake Murray Boulevard in downtown Irmo; and

Whereas, since the last move, the festival has more than doubled in participants, visitors, and revenue; and

Whereas, in 2001, the Irmo Town Council adopted a resolution to make Lake Murray Boulevard the permanent home of the Irmo Okra Strut Festival; and

Whereas, a commission of seven volunteers and one paid full-time administrator manages the Okra Strut Festival; and

Whereas, all revenues generated by the Okra Strut Festival are used to fund community projects; and

Whereas, since the festival moved to Lake Murray Boulevard in 1998, $197,388.52 has been put back into the community; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud of this outstanding organization for all its contributions and services to the community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the Town of Irmo on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Irmo Okra Strut Festival and commend the Irmo Okra Strut Festival Commission for their wonderful contributions to their community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Irmo Okra Strut Festival Commission.
