A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE MATTHEW MONTGOMERY OWENS OF GADSDEN AS THE FIRST SOUTH CAROLINA TEACHING FELLOW TO GRADUATE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY ON MAY 10, 2003, AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the South Carolina Teaching Fellows Program was implemented by the General Assembly in 1999 to address the problem of a shortage of teachers in our State by recruiting talented high school seniors into the teaching profession and helping them develop leadership qualities; and

Whereas, after a rigorous application and interview process, students like Matthew Montgomery Owens, who have exhibited high academic achievement, a history of service to the school and community, and a desire to teach South Carolina's children, are provided Fellowships; and

Whereas, Mr. Owens was a part of the first class that entered the program in the Fall of 2000, and he passed the PRAXIS II Subject Area test the summer between his freshman and sophomore year at South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, as a South Carolina Teaching Fellow, Mr. Owens has participated in advanced enrichment programs and professional development opportunities during summer months, has been involved with communities and businesses throughout the State, and has received a yearly scholarship while completing his teaching degree; and

Whereas, in addition to his studies, Matthew Owens has also been involved in organizations including national and international academic honor societies, Euclidean Club, String Ensemble, and student government, among others. He was also the President of the Teaching Fellows Program, a Student Orientation Leader, and a Felton Laboratory School PACT Homework Center Tutor; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are extremely pleased and proud to commend such a fine South Carolinian as Matthew Montgomery Owens for his outstanding accomplishment of being the first alumnus to graduate from the South Carolina Teaching Fellows Program at South Carolina State University. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend Matthew Montgomery Owens of Gadsden as the first South Carolina Teaching Fellow to graduate from South Carolina State University on May 10, 2003, and wish him much success in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Matthew Montgomery Owens of Gadsden.
