A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-43-25 SO AS TO REQUIRE THAT BEGINNING JULY 1, 2003, THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION SHALL GIVE THE EXAMINATION FOR THE GENERAL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA (GED) IN SPANISH AS WELL AS ENGLISH AND TO PROVIDE THAT PERSONS ACHIEVING A PASSING SCORE ON THE EXAMINATION GIVEN IN SPANISH MUST BE AWARDED A GENERAL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA IN THE SAME MANNER PERSONS PASSING THE ENGLISH VERSION OF THE EXAMINATION ARE AWARDED A DIPLOMA.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Chapter 43, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-43-25.    Beginning July 1, 2003, the State Board of Education shall give the examination for the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) in Spanish as well as English, and persons achieving a passing score on the examination given in Spanish must be awarded a General Equivalency Diploma in the same manner persons passing the English version of the examination are awarded a diploma."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
