A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE SPRING VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL "VIKINGS" AND THEIR HEAD COACH, JOHN JONES, ON WINNING THE 2003 CLASS AAAA BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP MEET AND TO COMMEND THEM FOR THEIR DEDICATION, HARD WORK, AND COMPETITIVE SPIRIT.

Whereas, being a member of a sports team allows young people to have the opportunity to learn the skills of cooperation and teamwork with developing great athletic talents; and

Whereas, to be a champion in cross country track, all members of the team and coaching staff must have outstanding leadership and physical abilities; and

Whereas, throughout their season, the Spring Valley High School boys' cross country team faced challenging opponents, but their dedication and determination paid off as they advanced to the state championship; and

Whereas, on November 8, 2003, Spring Valley High School captured the AAAA State Championship for boys' cross country track, bringing great pride and accomplishment to the school for their first state championship in cross country; and

Whereas, the state meet was a phenomenal finish for the "Viking" boys with two members crossing the finish line first and the team's average time coming in at 16:18, the fastest time in Coach Jones' tenure and fourteen seconds under Spring Valley's previous state meet record; and

Whereas, along their journey to the state championship, this team had a fantastic season winning eight out of eleven meets, including the Columbia County Invitational and the regional championship meet and finishing as the top South Carolina team in the Wendy's Invitational; and

Whereas, Coach John Jones is to be highly commended for his years of leadership and service in developing this outstanding program at Spring Valley and for his unending devotion, encouragement, and faith in his students; and

Whereas, the members of this exceptional team are Brian Raymond, Reid Wilson, William Hunter, Justin Hunter, Mike Clements, Mike Doucette, Steven Luckie, and Daniel Knight; and

Whereas, with all but two members returning next season, Head Coach John Jones will have an outstanding team to defend its State Championship title; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize the outstanding performance, physical abilities, and dogged determination of these young South Carolinians and wish them the best in their future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Spring Valley High School "Vikings" and their Head Coach, John Jones, on winning the 2003 Class AAAA Boys' Cross Country State Championship Meet and commend them for their dedication, hard work, and competitive spirit.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Spring Valley High School Boys' Cross County Team.
