TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF JOHN PAUL SHEPPARD OF GREER, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened by the death of John Paul Sheppard of Greer on November 13, 2002, at the age of fifty-six; and

Whereas, Mr. Sheppard was a decorated Army veteran and served his country during the Vietnam War. He received the Army Commendation Medal for service in Vietnam, the NCO Development Ribbon, and the Meritorious Service Award for Military Management; and

Whereas, as a member of the South Carolina National Guard, Mr. Sheppard was awarded the Frank Pickney Trophy for Academic Achievement in Leadership, the South Carolina Family of the Year Award, and the South Carolina Soldier of the Year Award; and

Whereas, Mr. Sheppard received a Master's Degree from Clemson University and began his thirty-three career in education as a teacher at Davenport High School in Greer; and

Whereas, after leaving Davenport, Mr. Sheppard taught at Francis Asbury Elementary School in Virginia and Beck Middle School in Greenville. He served as an outstanding principal at Grove Elementary School, Hughes Academy of Science and Technology, Greenville Middle School Academy, and Reidville Elementary School; and

Whereas, while he was principal at Reidville Elementary in Spartanburg County, the school was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School, was named a Governor's Compact Honor Roll School and a School of Promise, and received the Palmetto Gold Award for exemplary student achievement; and

Whereas, Mr. Sheppard was a presenter at state and national conferences for principals, served on the Superintendents' Management Team, was active in the Greenville County Association of Elementary Principals and the National Elementary School Association of Principals; and

Whereas, Mr. Sheppard was a life member of Phi Delta Kappa and the South Carolina Parent Teacher Association. He was active member of the First Presbyterian Church as chair of the Kindergarten Board and as an elder; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives extends its sympathy to the family and friends of John Paul Sheppard. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Sheppard; his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Paige Sheppard; and his parents, Paul and Emily Sheppard of New Jersey. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of John Paul Sheppard of Greer Wednesday, November 13, 2002, and convey deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Kathy Sheppard of Greer.
