A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND EXPRESS THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO GORDON NEVILLE CLARKSON, ESQUIRE, OF NEWBERRY COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR FIFTY YEARS OF DEDICATED AND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE NEWBERRY COUNTY BAR.

Whereas, Gordon N. Clarkson, Esquire, of Newberry County, retired from the practice of law in December 2003 after fifty years of loyal service as a dedicated and distinguished member of the Newberry County Bar; and

Whereas, for a half century, Attorney Clarkson specialized in transactional real estate closings and assisted thousands of citizens of Newberry County and surrounding areas in the purchasing and refinancing of their homes; and

Whereas, Gordon Clarkson regularly performed pro bono services for local churches and nonprofit organizations, and as a result, the public interest of the County and City of Newberry has been extremely well served by his steady contributions of time and talent; and

Whereas, during his career, he has served his nation, State, county, city, and church with competence and dedication; and

Whereas, Gordon Neville Clarkson was born on August 1, 1914, in Cokesbury, Greenwood County, the son of Reverend Gerardus Floyd Clarkson, a Methodist minister, and Nancy Ansel Clarkson; and

Whereas, he graduated from Mauldin High School in 1931 and graduated cum laude from Newberry College in 1935; and

Whereas, Mr. Clarkson subsequently began to "read law" in Newberry under the guidance of his brother, John F. Clarkson, and T. William Hunter, Attorneys at Law, but his legal pursuits were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II; and

Whereas, Gordon Clarkson served in the South Carolina Home Guard throughout 1942 and entered the United States Army Air Force in 1943 serving as a communications cryptographer in the Pacific Theatre; he was honorably discharged in 1945; and

Whereas, upon returning to Newberry, Mr. Clarkson resumed his legal pursuits, sat for the bar examination, and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1953. He joined the law firm of Clarkson and Hunter, which later became known as Clarkson, Hunter, and Clarkson; and

Whereas, Mr. Clarkson served his State for fifteen years as a member of the South Carolina Appeals Board for the Selective Service System, served his county as a member of the Newberry County Planning and Zoning Commission, and also served as a board member of the J. F. Hawkins Nursing Home, one of the first county-owned skilled care nursing facilities in South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. Clarkson served as president of the Newberry Kiwanis Club where he has enjoyed membership for sixty years; and

Whereas, Gordon Clarkson is a long-time member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church of Newberry where he has served as treasurer, deacon, congregational chairman, and trustee; and

Whereas, through his participation in the affairs of his community, Gordon Clarkson's professionalism, dignity, and selflessness has made a significant difference and improved the lives of his friends and neighbors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina recognize and express their appreciation to Gordon N. Clarkson, Esquire, of Newberry County, on the occasion of his retirement and commend him for fifty years of dedicated and distinguished service as a member of the Newberry County Bar.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Gordon N. Clarkson.
