A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE MEMBERS, MINISTERS, STAFF, AND FRIENDS OF THE HOLLY SPRINGS BAPTIST CHURCH OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF THE CELEBRATION OF ITS TWO HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR.

Whereas, the Holly Springs Baptist Church, located on Hannon Road near Inman in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, had its beginnings around 1800 with a dedicated group of believers worshipping in the area under brush arbors in the warmer months and in the Hogan cabin in the cold weather; and

Whereas, this group of dedicated believers came upon a spring surrounded by holly trees and aptly named the area "Holly Springs" and this area became the location of the first church house; and

Whereas, largely through the efforts of Austin Clayton, a church congregation was organized in the spring of 1804 with a total of fifty-six members, and Joseph Smith graciously donated seven acres of land on a rise above the spring and a crude log building was erected there; and

Whereas, in the 1820's, a larger building replaced the crude log building and the first clapboard building was erected in 1851 and stood for fifty-four years; and

Whereas, the time during the War Between the States was difficult for this small, rural community and the Reverend T. J. Earl faithfully pastored the church during the war and through much of the Reconstruction period; and

Whereas, around 1900 the Evergreen Sunday School was organized and for the first time, Christians met to worship every Sunday year round, and in 1906, the beautiful four hundred seat auditorium was built through faith although the membership was only two hundred fifty; and

Whereas, in 1941, Reverent Thomas Neely became the first full time pastor and he played a role in the 1955 building of the present sanctuary which underwent extensive renovations in 1998; and

Whereas, in addition to the sanctuary renovations, the church has gained a Family Life Center and modern facilities and equipment that have promoted the work and gospel of Jesus Christ; and

Whereas, the last two centuries of the second millennium have seen thirty-four different pastors and membership in six different associations for Holly Springs Baptist Church and their goal is to continue to respond in a greater way to the Lord's Great Commission as the church moves into the third millennium; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly recognize the Holly Springs Baptist Church on this momentous occasion of their two hundred year celebration on April 25, 2004, and extend to them their heartfelt congratulations. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the members, ministers, staff, and friends of the Holly Springs Baptist Church of Spartanburg County on the occasion of the celebration of its two hundredth anniversary this year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Holly Springs Baptist Church in Spartanburg County.
