A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE VERN FRANKLIN AMICK FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS COUNTLESS ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO BENEFIT THE STATE'S ECONOMIC GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.

Whereas, a native son of South Carolina, Mr. Amick was born in Prosperity in 1934, and is a 1962 graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in Business and Accounting; and

Whereas, while in the United States Army, Mr. Amick valiantly served a tour of duty in Korea during the Korean War, and, after returning from Korea, Mr. Amick became a senior accountant and auditor with the United States General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C.; and

Whereas, Mr. Amick worked for the Small Business Administration in South Carolina as a lending officer from 1965 until 1974, and as District Director from 1975 until 1982, when he was responsible for the approval of loans to more than one thousand small businesses amounting to more than four hundred million dollars; and

Whereas, in 1982, Mr. Amick began working at the former Bankers Trust of South Carolina where he assisted small businesses in economic development until 1984, when he was recruited by the Business Development Corporation to reinstate the Small Business Administration guaranty program, which he restored by January 1985; and

Whereas, his next step was as Executive Vice President and CEO of the Business Development Corporation, and he was elected President of the company in 1987. During his tenure, he developed the banking network and expanded the scope of the economic development activities throughout the State; and

Whereas, in 2000, Mr. Amick retired, but was persuaded by his successor, Edwin Lesley, to serve as the Executive Director of Certified Development Corporation, a position which he maintains today; and

Whereas, his advancements in the area of economic development have allowed the Palmetto State to keep pace with the ever-changing economic climate of the United States in our economic-centric society; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the House of Representatives congratulate Vern Franklin Amick for his invaluable accomplishments in promoting the state's economic growth and development. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize Vern Franklin Amick for his outstanding service to the State of South Carolina and commend him for his countless accomplishments to benefit the state's economic growth and development.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Vern Franklin Amick.
