A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE CHESTER HIGH SCHOOL "LADY CYCLONES" BASKETBALL TEAM AND THEIR HEAD COACH, ZEKE WASHINGTON, ON WINNING THE 2004 AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND TO COMMEND THEM FOR THEIR HARD WORK, COMPETITIVE SPIRIT, AND DEDICATION TO BECOMING A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM.

Whereas, being a member of a sports team allows young people to have the opportunity to learn the skills of cooperation and teamwork while developing athletic talents; and

Whereas, to be a champion in basketball, all members of the team and coaching staff must have outstanding leadership and excellent physical abilities; and

Whereas, with the guidance and leadership of Head Coach, Zeke Washington, the girls basketball team of Chester High School faced intimidating opponents and tough matches but were rewarded with the chance to become State Champions; and

Whereas, along their journey to the championship game, the "Lady Cyclones" enjoyed success in several competitions, entering the state finals with a record of 26-1; and

Whereas, capturing the title of State Champions, the 2004 girls basketball team defeated defending state champions Dreher High School with sophomore JaPel Sumpter opening up the lead for Chester in the fourth quarter; and

Whereas, with their win at the state championship game, the Chester High Girls Basketball Team sealed their winning season with their twenty-seventh victory, bringing home their first state championship since 1993; and

Whereas, sealing the victory for the "Lady Cyclones" were the big plays executed by JaPel Sumpter, whose free throws led to the 51-43 victory over Dreher, and the outstanding performance of Shakia Sanders who scored twenty-four points during the game; and

Whereas, the Chester Girls Basketball Team has brought great pride not only to their friends and family but also to the students, faculty, alumni, and staff of Chester and the community as a whole; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize the physical abilities of these young South Carolinians and hope that they will use their athletic skills and abilities in their future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to the Chester High School "Lady Cyclones" Basketball Team and their Head Coach, Zeke Washington, on winning the 2004 AAA Girls Basketball State Championship, and to commend them for their hard work, competitive spirit, and dedication to becoming a championship team.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Chester High School Girls Basketball Team and Head Coach Zeke Washington.
