A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE CLASS OF 1954 OF ALLEN UNIVERSITY AS IT CELEBRATES ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND THE MEMBERS OF THIS OUTSTANDING CLASS FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITY, STATE, AND NATION.

Whereas, Allen University was founded in 1870, just five years after the end of the civil war, and has operated continuously for one hundred thirty-four years; and

Whereas, the Class of 1954 entered Allen University at the mid point of the twentieth century in 1950 and graduated in 1954. The Class of 1954 has been very productive. The class has produced teachers, preachers, lawyers, business persons, research biologists, research chemists, and many who entered private enterprise; and

Whereas, the Class of 1954 will be celebrating its golden anniversary beginning Friday, April 23, 2004, and concluding Saturday, May 1, 2004; and

Whereas, Allen University, the State of South Carolina, the African Methodist-Episcopal Church, and many others nurtured and encouraged the members of the Class of 1954 through their long careers; and

Whereas, there have been many distinguished graduates in this class. For example, Bishop Frederick Hilborne Talbot, the presiding Bishop of the Thirteenth Episcopal District of the African Methodist-Episcopal Church is a member of the Class of 1954; and

Whereas, the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to offer its sincere congratulations to the members of this outstanding class and also remember those who began their education with the Class of 1954 who are no longer with us. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the Class of 1954 of Allen University as it celebrates its fiftieth anniversary and commend the members of this outstanding class for their contributions to their community, State, and nation.
