TO HONOR AND COMMEND MR. THURMAN DEMAREST SHULER OF ORANGEBURG FOR HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO EDUCATION AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize South Carolinians who are dedicated to giving their time and energy to helping build a sense of togetherness and developing young minds in their communities; and
Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements of those who teach and to encourage these individuals who continue to inspire children year after year; and
Whereas, Thurman DeMarest Shuler has been an educator in South Carolina for thirty-one years and his contributions have been more than greatly appreciated; and
Whereas, born May 5, 1934, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Mr. Shuler is the son of Mr. Harry Evans and Mrs. Rosebud Shuler Walker; and
Whereas, educated in the Public School System of Orangeburg, Mr. Shuler graduated from Wilkinson High School in 1953 and went on to South Carolina State College where he earned a B.A. in English in 1957; and
Whereas, commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the United States Military in 1957, Mr. Shuler was also a part of the South Carolina State College Guided Missiles and Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA); and
Whereas, resigning his commission, Mr. Shuler served in the Signal Corps from 1959 to 1962 where he was stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany, and Dreux, France; while in Germany he was the Director of the 29th Signal Battalion band; and
Whereas, returning to South Carolina State College, Mr. Shuler earned a Masters degree in Education in 1965 and began further study at the University of South Carolina in the doctoral program for British Literature; and
Whereas, Mr. Shuler began his teaching career at Holly Hill High School in Holly Hill, and throughout his teaching career, he has taught at Jefferson High School in York, Battery Park High School in Nesmith, John Ford High School, St. Matthews High School, and Calhoun County High School, all in St. Matthews; and
Whereas, spending a great deal of time in the Public School System of St. Matthews, Mr. Shuler became a beloved and recognizable figure in many students' lives, serving at St. Matthews High for over twelve years; and
Whereas, in addition to teaching, Mr. Shuler has also served as President of the Calhoun County Education Association twice, President of the music division of the Athletic Activities Association for District Eight, Department of South Carolina, Chairman of the Consolidation Committee to consolidate St. Matthews High and St. John High, and Chairman of the Calhoun Advisory Council; and
Whereas, serving as Chaplin for the Parent-Teachers-Students Association for two years, Mr. Shuler was also a representative for St. Matthews High on the Superintendent's Council, a life member of the NAACP, a member of the Whittaker Heights Concerned Citizens, Inc., the Sheriff's Association, the South Carolina Education Association, and the National Education Association; and
Whereas, actively involved in his faith, Mr. Shuler was the Minister of Music for the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church for forty-seven years, the Director of Vacation Bible School for twenty years, the Sunday School Secretary, Assistant Superintendent of Sunday Church School for six years, Superintendent of Sunday Church School for seventeen years, and is currently a musician at Mt. Sinai R.M.U.E. Church, Orangeburg County Council on Aging, and the Andrew Chapel Christian Academy; and
Whereas, an avid traveler, Mr. Shuler has visited all fifty states and Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, the Bahamas, and Niagara Falls in Canada, and he teaches private piano lessons as well; and
Whereas, Thurman Shuler is an integral part of the Orangeburg community and his love and passion of teaching and sharing has provided the community with more than three decades of guidance and support. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and commend Mr. Thurman DeMarest Shuler of Orangeburg for his contributions to education and to extend best wishes to him in all of his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Thurman Shuler of Orangeburg.
