A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS APPRECIATION TO JACK MAYBANK, SR., AND MAYBANK SHIPPING COMPANY FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, OUR CITIZENS AND THEIR ECONOMIC WELL-BEING.

Whereas, Maybank Shipping Company is a recognized leader in the maritime industry in South Carolina, the Southeastern United States and the Caribbean basin; and

Whereas, Maybank Shipping Company has pioneered trade with Cuba, in accordance with all federal requirements and regulations, for the benefit of the economy of the State of South Carolina and the nation; and

Whereas, Maybank Shipping Company's barge "Helen III" was the first United States flag vessel with a United States crew to call at Havana in forty one years; and

Whereas, Maybank Shipping Company was recognized as the "World Trader of the Year" for 2003 by the South Carolina World Trade Center; and

Whereas, Maybank Shipping Company has been helpful to both state government officials and private sector companies in South Carolina in providing guidance regarding trade with Cuba, including assistance at the request of Lieutenant Governor Bauer in coordinating the first South Carolina Trade Delegation visit to Cuba in January 2004, which obtained a letter of intent from the Cuban government to purchase $10 million of agricultural products for the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Maybank Shipping Company was founded in 1988 by Jack Maybank, Sr., a highly respected citizen of Charleston who has served the State of South Carolina and its citizens with distinction and honor as a maritime community advocate and businessman with unmatched entrepreneurial spirit; and

Whereas, Jack Maybank, Sr., is a dedicated family man and a pillar of his community, married to the former Helen Silcox and the father of four children and five wonderful grandchildren; and

Whereas, it is appropriate for the members of the General Assembly to express their appreciation to Jack Maybank, Sr., and Maybank Shipping Company for service to the people of South Carolina and commend them for those qualities that have made them an exemplar in business fortitude and civic leadership. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, express their appreciation to Jack Maybank, Sr., and Maybank Shipping Company for distinguished service to the State of South Carolina, our citizens and their economic well-being.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jack Maybank, Sr., and Maybank Shipping Company.
