A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE FAMILY OF THE LATE CLARENCE EUGENE PRESSLEY OF ABBEVILLE ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RECEIVING POSTHUMOUS RECOGNITION BY THE PLACEMENT OF AN HISTORICAL MARKER ON THE SITE OF HIS PRINCIPAL BUSINESS IN THE CITY OF ABBEVILLE, THE INDUCTION INTO THE 2004 ABBEVILLE COUNTY HALL OF FAME, AND THE RENAMING OF A PORTION OF SPRING STREET IN HIS HONOR.

Whereas, being a leader in the Abbeville business, church, and civic community in the early 1900's, the late Clarence Eugene Pressley owned several businesses throughout the city; and

Whereas, Mr. Pressley's business enterprises over a period of forty years included a barbershop, pool hall, beauty shop, a restaurant on Spring Street, a community market on Branch Street, a restaurant on Church Street, and an automotive repair shop; and

Whereas, Mr. Pressley was greatly respected for his love of God and man, philanthropy, his devotion to Shady Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Dreher Masonic Lodge #370, and other benevolent societies and for his leadership in registering African Americans to vote; and

Whereas, Mr. Pressley along with his wife, Maude, raised six children: Mary Jean, Dorothy Mae, John Wilbert, Gloria Frances, Wallace Conway, and Betty Joan who graduated from college or vocational school and followed his example of leadership in the church and community. He and Mrs. Pressley had a seventh child Clarence Eugene who died in infancy. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate the family of the late Clarence Eugene Pressley of Abbeville on the occasion of his receiving posthumous recognition by the placement of an historical marker on the site of his principal business in the City of Abbeville, the induction into the 2004 Abbeville County Hall of fame, and the renaming of a portion of Spring Street in his honor.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Dorothy Pressley Turner, the oldest living child of Mr. Pressley.
