A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE CAYCE-WEST COLUMBIA LIONS CLUB ON THE OCCASION OF ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY AND TO COMMEND ALL OF ITS MEMBERS, PAST AND PRESENT, FOR THEIR WONDERFUL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEIR COMMUNITY, STATE, AND NATION.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to learn that the Cayce-West Columbia Lions Club will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary this year; and

Whereas, the Cayce-West Columbia Lions Club is part of Lions International; and

Whereas, Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization with approximately one and one-half million members in more than forty-four thousand clubs in one hundred ninety countries and geographical areas, and is made up of men and women who volunteer their time and talents to humanitarian causes; and

Whereas, this distinguished club is recognized throughout South Carolina as a leader not only of fellow Lions Clubs throughout our State, but also of Lions International as well, and has had six district governors and numerous other individuals serving in various offices of the district, the Eye Bank, and the State Organization; and

Whereas, the organizational meeting for the Cayce-West Columbia Lions Club was held at the Market Restaurant in Columbia, South Carolina, in July of 1952. The club was chartered on August 15, 1952, with forty-seven charter members and held the official Charter Night the following September ninth. Three of those charter members are still active and contributing members of the club; and

Whereas, this club has sponsored three new Lions Clubs: the Metro-Airport Lions Club, Chapin Lions Club, and New Brookland Lions Club. Over the years the club has also provided financial assistance for the help of individuals in need for the community; and

Whereas, the following represents just a few examples of the activities in which the club has participated and supported on an ongoing basis:

(1)    a shopping day for a group of needy children,

(2)    two memorial scholarships given annually in memory of all Lions who were active club members at the time of their deaths to a senior from each of the two high schools in Lexington School District Two, Brookland-Cayce High School and Airport High School,

(3)    sponsorship of one student each from both American Legion Post #130 and Post #79 to go to Boys State,

(7)    a program to register persons for eye and other organ donations; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize this outstanding organization for all its contributions and services, for now half a century, on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, congratulate the Cayce-West Columbia Lions Club on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary and commend all of its members, past and present, for their wonderful contributions to their community, State, and nation.
