TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO WASHINGTON STREET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF COLUMBIA ON THE OCCASION OF THE CHURCH'S BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION DURING 2003 AND TO EXTEND OUR APPRECIATION FOR THE CHURCH'S SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN SHAPING THE LIVES OF MANY RESIDENTS OF COLUMBIA AND THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, churches in this State provide encouragement and support to their members and promote the spiritual growth of their congregations through Bible lessons, songs of praise, and other ministerial work; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the invaluable work of preachers and members of churches in teaching religion and advocating for peace among all people; and

Whereas, the Church Council of the Washington Street United Methodist Church of Columbia has announced that 2003 will mark the bicentennial of this stately and prominent downtown Columbia church; and

Whereas, for two hundred years, Washington Street United Methodist Church has been dedicated and generous to the citizens of Columbia and is held in high regard by the residents of the area and across the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, early ministers of this church, such as Bishop William Capers, who served Washington Street United Methodist Church in the early nineteenth century, engaged in extensive educational and mission outreach to plantation slaves in this and other Southern states; and

Whereas, the church has served as the principal place of worship for numerous governors, state legislators, and many other prominent officials in the State of South Carolina since 1803; and

Whereas, the past and present congregations of Washington Street United Methodist Church have always provided stalwart support during times of state or national crisis, including making the ultimate sacrifice of many of its members during wars in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and

Whereas, since its founding in 1803, this church has existed as a bedrock of strongly held Christian values, and according to South Carolina historian, Walter Edgar, the church has sought to establish "the good order and harmony of the whole community". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend congratulations to Washington Street United Methodist Church of Columbia on the occasion of the church's bicentennial celebration during 2003 and extend our appreciation for the church's significant role in shaping the lives of many residents of Columbia and the State of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the congregation of Washington Street United Methodist Church of Columbia.
