A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE EAU CLAIRE COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTERS IN THE GREATER COLUMBIA AREA AND PFIZER FOR THEIR COMMITMENT TO SHARING THE CARE, A PARTNERSHIP THAT EXPANDS ACCESS TO PFIZER MEDICATIONS, AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THIS UNIQUE AND MEANINGFUL PARTNERSHIP.

Whereas, the mission of the Eau Claire Cooperative Health Centers in Columbia is to provide comprehensive, high quality, compassionate medical care in the Spirit of the Good Samaritan as described in the Gospel of Luke; and

Whereas, the Eau Claire Cooperative Heath Centers provide access to quality primary care and are a "Medical home" to many, especially those with children in nearby medically under-served areas of Columbia and the Midlands; and

Whereas, the centers are among the largest community health centers in the State. The insured and uninsured are welcome and a sliding fee scale is available to help those in financial distress; and

Whereas, the centers are a private, non-profit corporation supported by revenue from patient services and gifts from many involved individuals, churches, civic groups, corporations, and foundations; and

Whereas, Pfizer is deeply committed to removing obstacles to quality health care. In 1993, Pfizer stepped forward to address this critical need by creating Sharing the Care, a unique partnership joining Pfizer, the National Governors' Association, and the National Association of Community Health Centers; and

Whereas, this partnership is regarded as the "gold standard" for successful public/private partnerships for pharmaceutical access, and each partner plays a vital role in the program's ongoing success; and

Whereas, through Sharing the Care, Pfizer donates its most advanced medicines to low-income, uninsured patients through a network of over 380 federally-qualified community, migrant, and homeless health centers across the United States; and

Whereas, Pfizer has partnered with the Eau Claire Community Health Centers to provide greater access to its medicines for low income patients in the Midlands and on January 22, 2004, will celebrate their tenth anniversary of Sharing the Care, the partnership that has lead to much healthier, happier, and productive lives for many South Carolinians. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend the Eau Claire Community Health Centers in the greater Columbia area and Pfizer for their commitment to Sharing the Care, a partnership that expands access to Pfizer medications for lower income residents, and congratulate them on the tenth anniversary of this unique and meaningful partnership.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Stuart Hamilton, Director, Eau Claire Cooperative Health Centers.
