TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE REVEREND JAMES R. FIELDS ON HIS RETIREMENT AFTER THIRTY-ONE YEARS OF SERVICE AT THE PLYMOUTH CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize South Carolinians who are dedicated to giving their time and energy to helping build a sense of togetherness and faith among the people of their communities; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements of the people who selflessly work towards making their community, as well as their State, a better place and to commend those individuals who have continuously served as the pillars of their community; and

Whereas, Reverend James R. Fields, Pastor of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, has been inspiring the congregation of his church for thirty-one years and his respect and devotion to the church have been unparalleled; and

Whereas, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, Reverend Fields became the acting pastor of Plymouth Church following the passing of Reverend John T. Enwright in 1975 and became an ordained pastor in 1977; and

Whereas, before being "called" to Plymouth Church, Reverend Fields served as Moderator of the Georgia-South Carolina Association of the Southeast Conference from 1974 to 1981; and

Whereas, after formally taking over as Pastor of Plymouth Church, Reverend Fields put into action plans to enlarge and carpet the sanctuary, add ten new pews, and provide cushioning for all the pews; and

Whereas, in addition to enlarging the church, Reverend Fields dedicated an addition to the property in 1982, memorializing former pastor John T. Enwright; and

Whereas, under the leadership of Reverend Fields, the church also gained stained glass windows, an iron United Church of Christ emblem, new Bibles and hymnals, and a restoration of the church's traditional organ; and

Whereas, in January 2001, Deacon Kathy Robinson-Nelson received her license to preach the Gospel under the guidance of Reverend Fields and she successfully completed the requirements of the Theology Among People Program; and

Whereas, as a mentor and spiritual leader of his congregation, Reverend James Fields became an adored mentor and devoted pastor whose good works and dedication will remain in the hearts of those he touched throughout his service at Plymouth Congregational Church. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize Reverend James R. Fields on his retirement after thirty-one years of service at the Plymouth Congregational Church and extend best wishes to him in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend James R. Fields.
