A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO AUTHORIZE THE COMMISSIONING OF A PORTRAIT OF THE HONORABLE JEFFERSON VERNE SMITH OF GREER TO BE PLACED IN THE SENATE CHAMBER, LONGTIME AND BELOVED SENATOR FROM THE FIFTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT, A LOYAL AND COMPASSIONATE PUBLIC SERVANT AND A DISTINGUISHED STATESMAN.

Whereas, the Honorable J. Verne Smith of Greer has been a distinguished member of the Senate since 1972; and

Whereas, during J. Verne Smith's distinguished political career, he has served on numerous committees of the Senate to include Finance, Medical Affairs, Rules, Interstate Cooperation, which he Chairs, and Labor, Commerce and Industry, of which he is also the chairman; and

Whereas, J. Verne Smith's selfless service to the citizens of South Carolina has been documented by numerous awards bestowed upon him including the Order of the Palmetto, Honorary Doctoral degrees from MUSC, Presbyterian College, and the University of South Carolina, Spartanburg, and countless Legislator of the Year awards presented by various organizations; and

Whereas, in addition to his outstanding service to the citizens of this State during his tenure in the Senate, J. Verne Smith has demonstrated tremendous business acumen and achieved great professional success as President of The Tire Exchange, Inc. of Greer; and

Whereas, J. Verne Smith also aided his nation during its time of need in World War II by serving in the United States Army from 1943 through 1946; and

Whereas, throughout a successful business and political career he has remained committed to his family and his faith by being a devoted husband to his wife, Jean Myers Smith, and father to his two children, Jefferson Verne, Jr. and Carole Jean Smith Olmert, and by serving as an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Greer; and

Whereas, the many contributions of J. Verne Smith to the well-being of the citizens of the State are numerous and greatly deserving of permanent recognition and tribute in a place of honor in the Senate Chamber where he has served with such great distinction. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the Senate authorizes the commissioning of a portrait of the Honorable J. Verne Smith of Greer to be hung in the Senate Chamber as a tribute to this great South Carolinian and distinguished statesman. The portrait shall measure no more than thirty-six inches high and thirty-two inches wide.

Be it further resolved that a Portrait Committee of seven members of the Senate be appointed by the President Pro Tempore of the Senate. The senior member of the committee shall serve as its chairman. The committee shall handle the arrangements and details of the hanging of a portrait including, but not limited to, the location for the portrait and an appropriate ceremony to commemorate the unveiling and dedication of the portrait. The cost of obtaining the portrait must be paid by private contributions.

Be it further resolved that the Clerk of the Senate shall provide such assistance and services as the committee shall direct.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable J. Verne Smith.
