A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AMBASSADOR JOHN CARL WEST FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED CAREER AS A UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR, GOVERNOR, LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, STATE SENATOR, AND STATESMAN, AND OFFER OUR HEARTFELT PRAYERS TO HIM, FORMER FIRST LADY LOIS WEST, AND THEIR FAMILY.

Whereas, the Honorable John C. West was born on August 27, 1922, in Camden, South Carolina; and

Whereas, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Citadel in 1942, graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1948, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa; and

Whereas, Governor West served this country as a Major in the United States Army; and

Whereas, he is a World War II veteran; and

Whereas, from 1955-1966 he served in the South Carolina Senate; and

Whereas, from 1966-1970 he was the Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina; and

Whereas, from 1971-1975 he served as Governor of South Carolina; and

Whereas, in 1977 he was appointed United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia by former President Jimmy Carter; and

Whereas, he is married to the former Lois Rhame of Camden, and together they are the proud parents of three children; and

Whereas, it is with heartfelt sorrow that the members of the Senate have been informed that our former colleague has been stricken with a serious illness and wish to offer to the Ambassador, former First Lady Lois West, and their family our prayers during this most difficult period. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, extend our gratitude to John Carl West for his distinguished career as a United States Ambassador, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, State Senator, and statesman, and offer our heartfelt prayers to him, former First Lady Lois West, and their family.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ambassador and Mrs. West.
