TO COMMEND THE ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS THAT HAVE JOINED TO MAKE STRONG COMMUNITIES AN IMPORTANT PART OF DAILY LIFE IN THE AREA THAT IT SERVES AND ENCOURAGE THE CITIZENS OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO JOIN IN THE OBSERVANCE OF CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH AND TO PARTICIPATE IN VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES AND COMMUNITY EVENTS IN THE STRONG COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE.
Whereas, Strong Communities for Children in the Golden Strip is a model initiative for community action to prevent child abuse and neglect; and
Whereas, this initiative is a Clemson University Public Service Activity based at the Golden Strip Family and Child Development Center and principally supported by a long-term, multi-million dollar grant from The Duke Endowment; and
Whereas, the Clemson University Institute on Family and Neighborhood Life has also provided substantial support for Strong Communities; and
Whereas, Strong Communities has engaged scores of churches, many businesses and schools, hundreds of volunteers, and most of the civic organizations, public safety agencies, and municipal governments in southern Greenville County and neighboring communities of Anderson and Laurens Counties; and
Whereas, these organizations and individuals have committed themselves to watch out for children and parents so that they can be confident someone will notice and someone will care whenever they have reason to celebrate, worry, or grieve; and
Whereas, such a norm of neighborliness for young families will make South Carolina an even better place to live; and
Whereas, preservation of children's safety and support for their families are fundamental responsibilities of the State and the communities that comprise it; and
Whereas, April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month and the second anniversary of the launch of Strong Communities. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, commend the organizations and individuals that have joined to make Strong Communities an important part of daily life in the area that it serves and encourage the citizens of South Carolina to join in the observance of Child Abuse Prevention Month and to participate in volunteer activities and community events in the Strong Communities initiative.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Strong Communities.
