TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE SHAKEEM KENYA LANE FOR HIS ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE FIELD OF MEDICINE, TO CONGRATULATE HIM UPON HIS GRADUATION FROM THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA ON MAY 21, 2004, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, success in the field of medicine requires commitment and self-sacrifice, often putting the needs of patients before your own needs; and
Whereas, Shakeem Kenya Lane is the embodiment of self-sacrifice and dedication and his commitment to becoming a physician is a dream come true; and
Whereas, raised in the rural town of Blair, South Carolina, Mr. Lane grew up knowing the tragedies that strike families who cannot afford adequate medical care and promised that he would dedicate his life to provide those families with the health care they needed at an affordable price; and
Whereas, Mr. Lane witnessed firsthand how a devastating disease can financially cripple a family, and he took on a leadership role in his family at an early age when his mother developed numerous and varied health problems that prohibited her from working; and
Whereas, setting his sights on medical school, Mr. Lane pushed himself to excel academically and earned over one hundred thousand dollars in scholarships upon graduation from high school; and
Whereas, after graduating from Davidson College in 1998 with a B.S. degree in Biology, Mr. Lane entered the Medical University of South Carolina in 2000 where he has continued to impress those around him with his level of commitment and expertise; and
Whereas, a Crisis Ministries volunteer and Class of 2004 Vice-President, Mr. Lane also participated in a Medical Mission trip to Venezuela and piloted a medical care reciprocity program with MUSC and a town in Zambia; and
Whereas, with over 350 hours of community service, Mr. Lane's passion to help others carries over from his chosen profession into his daily life, and his desire to better the lives of underprivileged families demonstrates the abundance of compassion and empathy this man has for the members of his community; and
Whereas, although the road has been long and many times tough for Mr. Lane, he will finally achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a physician when he graduates from MUSC on May 21, 2004; and
Whereas, Mr. Lane, along with his sister, Tameka Kimesung Lane, will become the first brother and sister to graduate at the same time from the College of Medicine and the first African-American siblings ever to graduate from the College of Medicine at MUSC; and
Whereas, specializing in Anesthesiology, Mr. Lane has accepted an invitation to do his internship at Howard University Hospital and his residency at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.; and
Whereas, despite the rocky beginnings in his life, Shakeem Lane has managed to overcome adversity and has propelled himself to the top of his class year after year and it is no doubt that he will continue his success long into the future; and
Whereas, with his passion and faith, Mr. Shakeem Lane has become a young man that the Palmetto State is proud to call one of its own. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize Shakeem Kenya Lane for his achievements in the field of medicine, congratulate him upon his graduation from the Medical University of South Carolina on May 21, 2004, and extend best wishes to him in all of his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Shakeem Kenya Lane of Blair, South Carolina.
