TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE SENATOR WARREN GIESE UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE AFTER NEARLY TWENTY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN ALL OF HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, to serve the State of South Carolina through political office is a noble task that only truly dedicated public servants undertake; and
Whereas, Warren Kenneth Giese has served as the State Senator from Richland and Kershaw counties for the past twenty years and his influence and determination have made him one of the most beloved political figures from Richland County; and
Whereas, the son of Herbert and Lydia Giese, Senator Giese was born July 14, 1924, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946 before attending Wisconsin State University, the University of Oklahoma, and Central Michigan University; and
Whereas, in 1948 Senator Giese graduated cum laude from Central Michigan University with an A.B. and B.S. and continued his education at the University of Maryland, graduating with a Master's degree in Education in 1950; and
Whereas, soon after graduating from the University of Maryland, Senator Giese married Phyllis Phillips on December 23, 1951, and together they are the proud parents of four children, Alison, Melanie, Warren, and King; and
Whereas, a Physical Education and Assistant Football Coach for the University of Maryland from 1948-1955, Senator Giese never gave up his love for education and athletics, becoming the Head Football Coach at the University of South Carolina in 1956 and its Athletic Director in 1959; and
Whereas, while working as an Associate Professor and Department Head for Health and Physical Education, Senator Giese managed to obtain his Doctorate degree in Education from Florida State University in 1965 and became the Dean of the College of Health and Physical Education at the University of South Carolina in 1974 where he served in this position for four years; and
Whereas, as a Professor at the University of South Carolina from 1979-1983, Senator Giese was well-liked by the students and faculty and was named a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 1984 when he felt the call to serve the people of Richland County in the Senate; and
Whereas, in addition to his numerous achievements in the educational field, Senator Giese is also the author of several publications, has served as a member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the vice president of the International Federation of University Sports, and the Executive Commissioner of the South Carolina Amateur Athletic Union; and
Whereas, a member of the American Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Senator Giese has also served as the Executive Director of the United States Collegiate Sports Council, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the United States Sports Academy, and Project Administrator of the Summer Feeding Program for the USDA; and
Whereas, a humanitarian in every sense of the word, Senator Giese has worked with the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institute and pioneered the Nigerian Sports Project and the National Youth Sports Program; and
Whereas, elected to the State Senate in 1985, Senator Warren Kenneth Giese has served for nearly twenty consecutive years and his presence will be sorely missed upon his retirement as will his continuous efforts to better the lives of all those constituents in Richland and Kershaw counties who have loved and cherished him throughout the past twenty years. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize Senator Warren Kenneth Giese upon his retirement from the South Carolina Senate after nearly twenty years of service to the State of South Carolina and extend best wishes to him in all of his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Senator Warren Kenneth Giese of Richland County.
