A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE THE JAMES F. BYRNES HIGH SCHOOL REBELS FOOTBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2002 CLASS AAAA DIVISION II STATE CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2002.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina applaud the James F. Byrnes High School Football Team for winning the 2002 Class AAAA Division II State Championship and the discipline and dedication the young men demonstrated to take the state title; and

Whereas, the Rebels had an outstanding season with fourteen wins against only one loss to Evangelical Christian, a nationally ranked high school football team in Shreveport, Louisiana. The Rebels also achieved the esteemed honor of being nationally ranked at number twenty; and

Whereas, the Rebels have a high-powered offense that set a school record for total offense in a season, and were fortunate to be able to rely also on the defense that held eight opponents to seven points or fewer; and

Whereas, Byrnes beat Mauldin High School fifteen to seven for the Upper State Title and the opportunity to cap their season of hard work against Conway for the state title; and

Whereas, Byrnes defeated Conway thirty-four to twenty-eight in an exciting championship game at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia. Most of the Rebels' points came from three touchdown passes from quarterback Justin Fulbright to Bradley Robinson; and

Whereas, the Rebels are led by Coach Bobby Bentley who brought home Byrnes' first state title since 1986. Coach Bentley was quarterback and defensive back for the 1985 Byrnes High School Football Team and returned to his alma mater in 1995 as the Head Coach; and

Whereas, Coach Bentley, assistant coaches, and staff motivated the players to participate in an off-season strength and conditioning program that paid off and enabled the team to reach the State Championship; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to recognize the James F. Byrnes High School Rebels Football Team on a remarkable season and for winning the State Championship. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate the James F. Byrnes High School Rebels Football Team for winning the 2002 Class AAAA Division II State Championship Friday, December 6, 2002.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the James F. Byrnes High School Rebels Football Team and Coach Bobby Bentley.
