TO CONGRATULATE EUGENE RUSSELL BATEN OF SUMTER ON RECEIVING A POLITICAL ACTIONS AWARD FROM THE SUMTER BRANCH OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE FREEDOM FUND AWARDS BANQUET ON NOVEMBER 8, 2002, COMMEND HIS HARD WORK AND DEDICATION TO PROMOTING RACIAL EQUALITY, AND WISH HIM EVERY SUCCESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Mr. Eugene Russell Baten was born in Fairfax County, Virginia, and at the age of five, his family relocated to Washington, D. C. He attended public schools in Washington, D. C. and graduated from Phelps Vocational High School; and
Whereas, after graduating from high school, Mr. Baten enlisted in the United States Air Force. He obtained three Associate Degrees in Applied Sciences during his distinguished military career. He was awarded the United States Air Force Certificate of Distinguished Scholastic Achievement along with numerous other military awards and decorations. Mr. Baten retired from the Air Force after twenty-seven years of honorable service with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant; and
Whereas, Mr. Baten graduated from Saint Leo University Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Criminology, and also received a Master of Science Degree, with honors, from Golden State University; and
Whereas, in 1987, he became a full-time employee with the Sumter County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and has served as School Intervention Program Coordinator, Pretrial Intervention Coordinator, Intervention Services Director, and is currently the Executive Director; and
Whereas, Mr. Baten has been a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People since high school and is currently a Life Subscriber. He is active with the Sumter Branch and a member of the Executive Committee. Mr. Baten also served as Co-Chairman of the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce Human Relations Council for three years, which served as a forum where community leaders and citizens could openly discuss racial issues that impacted the county; and
Whereas, he is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Goodfellows Club of Sumter, and the Sumter Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He is a certified Registration and Elections Commissioner of Sumter County and a South Carolina State Constable; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize Eugene Russell Baten for his commitment to promoting racial equality and his distinguished military career. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Eugene Russell Baten of Sumter on receiving a Political Actions Award from the Sumter Branch of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People Freedom Fund Awards Banquet on November 8, 2002, commend his hard work and dedication to promoting racial equality, and wish him every success in his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Eugene Russell Baten of Sumter.
