TO CONGRATULATE DR. MARION H. NEWTON OF SUMTER ON RECEIVING THE 2002 CITIZENSHIP AWARD AT THE SUMTER BRANCH OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE FREEDOM FUND AWARDS BANQUET ON NOVEMBER 8, 2002, COMMEND HIS HARD WORK AND DEDICATION TO PROMOTING RACIAL EQUALITY, AND WISH HIM EVERY SUCCESS IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, Dr. Marion H. Newton came to Sumter in 1982, to become the Pastor of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. The first interracial countywide worship service was organized by Pastor Newton under the Unity Sumter program and is now an annual event; and
Whereas, Dr. Newton has initiated several blood drives to benefit patients of sickle cell anemia. He is an active member of the Sumter Family Health Center of Tuomey Board of Directors. He ensures that the health needs of uninsured and the under-insured are met. Dr. Newton is a member of the Medical Ethics Committee for Tuomey Healthcare System and serves as community liaison to make certain patients' rights are maintained, as they relate to heath care issues; and
Whereas, he serves on many different boards including the Executive Board of Central Carolina Technical College, Habitat for Humanity, Crime Stoppers, Police Advisory Board, Sumter-Columbia Empowerment Zone, Unity Sumter, Jay Strack Crusade, and Sumter Vision 2002. He is very active in the community and helps to bring a better quality of life to Sumter residents; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize Dr. Marion H. Newton for his commitment to racial equality and his dedication to the citizens of Sumter County. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Dr. Marion H. Newton of Sumter on receiving the 2002 Citizenship Award at the Sumter Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Freedom Fund Awards Banquet on November 8, 2002, commend his hard work and dedication to promoting racial equality, and wish him every success in his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Marion H. Newton of Sumter.
