A HOUSE RESOLUTION

COMMENDING LAVAUGHN NESMITH, COUNTY DIRECTOR OF THE ORANGEBURG COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES, FOR HIS MANY YEARS OF PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND ITS MOST VULNERABLE CITIZENS THROUGH ITS VARIOUS SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAMS AND WISHING HIM CONTINUED PRODUCTIVITY AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, LaVaughn Nesmith has served as Director of the Orangeburg County Department of Social Services since 1998; and

Whereas, during that time he has effectively directed the department's two hundred ten employees and budget of more than two hundred million dollars in the delivery of human services to the county of ninety-six thousand; and

Whereas, that position capped a career of almost thirty years with DSS, including experience as a supervisor for Economic Services, Work Support Service, and Social Services, and a six-year stint as director of the Jasper County operations; and

Whereas, his decades of proven leadership earned him the honor and responsibility of heading up the state agency's Wheels to Work program, and resulted in other successful countywide programs including the maintenance of low error rate in the Food Stamp Program, highest recruitment rate for foster parents, and initiation of the first Fatherhood Initiative; and

Whereas, this graduate of Claflin University, with a masters degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from South Carolina State University, has a lifetime of connections to Orangeburg County and this State; and

Whereas, his professional and compassionate efforts have led to healthier, happier lives for many of its most vulnerable citizens. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend LaVaughn Nesmith, County Director of the Orangeburg County Department of Social Services, for his many years of public service to the State of South Carolina and its most vulnerable citizens through its various social services programs, and wishing him continued productivity and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to LaVaughn Nesmith.
