A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND RECOGNIZE HIS EXCELLENCY THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA, DR. KENNETH DAVID KAUNDA, FOR HIS CHARISMATIC POLITICAL LEADERSHIP AND HIS OUTSTANDING LIFE ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

Whereas, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda began his career in politics in 1950 as the founder and Secretary of the Lubwa Branch of the African National Congress and also served as the Secretary General of the Northern Rhodesia African National Congress before forming the Zambian African National Congress in 1958, of which he became president; and

Whereas, with the arrival of Zambia's first black government in 1962, Dr. Kaunda became the Minister of Local Government and Social Welfare and the Prime Minister of Northern Rhodesia and was elected as the first President of the Republic of Zambia in 1964, a position he held until 1991; and

Whereas, in Dr. Kaunda's efforts to liberate all of Africa, Dr. Kaunda served as the President of the Pan-African Freedom Movement of East, Central, and Southern Africa and the Chairman of the Organization of African Unity, as well as playing a key role in the mitigation of territorial disputes and liberation of several African countries; and

Whereas, dedicated to establishing peace in Africa, Dr. Kaunda founded the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Foundation in 1992, and now devotes his life to fighting AIDS and poverty in Africa; and

Whereas, in addition to his political career, Dr. Kaunda has authored several books on government, freedom, humanism, and violence and has been granted numerous Honorary Doctorates of Law and other honorary degrees from various universities throughout the world. He married Betty Banda in 1946 and has fathered ten children; and

Whereas, it is appropriate that the members of the General Assembly recognize and extol Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda for his dedication to serving the people of Africa in his political life and his fight for peace and for making the world a better place. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina commend and recognize His Excellency the first President of the Republic of Zambia, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, for his charismatic political leadership and his outstanding life accomplishments.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda.
