THE COMMITTEE ON INVITATIONS

AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 4024) to request the Department of Transportation to name the portion of new Interstate Highway 73 in Horry County as the "Ashby Ward Memorial Highway" in honor of the late Ashby Ward, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO NAME THE PORTION OF NEW INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 73 IN HORRY COUNTY AS THE "ASHBY WARD MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" IN HONOR OF THE LATE ASHBY WARD, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE MYRTLE BEACH AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AT THE TIME OF HIS DEATH, AND TO INSTALL APPROPRIATE MARKERS CONTAINING THE WORDS "ASHBY WARD MEMORIAL HIGHWAY".

Whereas, Ashby Ward was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce at the time of his death earlier this month; and

Whereas, during his tenure, the Myrtle Beach area experienced substantial growth and worldwide recognition as a major center for recreation, tourism, and business development, and Mr. Ward is widely regarded as a driving force behind the area's economic success; and

Whereas, prior to joining the chamber, Ashby Ward served for four years as the Director of Public Affairs with the South Carolina Technical College System. He also spent ten years as a news anchor for South Carolina television stations in Charleston, Florence, and Columbia; and

Whereas, in March 2002, the chamber's board of directors honored him for his work in promoting tourism along the Grand Strand by naming the organization's new visitor center in his honor; and

Whereas, in 1995, the South Carolina Senate recognized his work by presenting him with an honorary Doctorate of Commerce degree. Three years later, he was presented the South Carolina Tourism Award from the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism and the Fred Brinkman Award from the South Carolina Travel and Tourism Coalition; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly believe it would be a fitting tribute to this outstanding South Carolinian if the portion of new Interstate Highway 73 in Horry County were named in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the Department of Transportation is requested to name the portion of new Interstate Highway 73 in Horry County as the "Ashby Ward Memorial Highway" in honor of the late Ashby Ward and to install appropriate markers containing the words "Ashby Ward Memorial Highway".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to The Department of Transportation.
