A BILL

TO AMEND ACT 231 OF 1993, RELATING TO THE BOARD OF ELECTION AND REGISTRATION FOR UNION COUNTY, SO AS TO REDUCE THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE BOARD FROM NINE MEMBERS TO EIGHT MEMBERS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Section 1(A) of Act 231 of 1993 is amended to read:

"(A)    There is created the Board of Election and Registration of Union County. There are nine eight members of the board who must be appointed by the Governor upon recommendation of a majority of the Union County Legislative Delegation, including the Senators, who are appointed for terms of four years and until their successors are appointed and qualify, except that initially in order to stagger terms, four members must be appointed for terms of two years. At the expiration of these two-year terms, successors must be appointed for terms of four years. The board shall elect such officers as it considers necessary."

SECTION    2.    The eight members of the Board of Election and Registration of Union County serving in office on the effective date of this section shall constitute the eight members of the board provided for by this act. Upon the expiration of their current terms, successors shall be appointed in the manner provided by law.

SECTION    3.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
