A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE SINCERE GRATITUDE OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO DORIS D. COLE, PH. D. OF WILLIAMSTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, IN ANDERSON COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HER RETIREMENT AS PRINCIPAL OF WHITEHALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, FOR HER MANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THIS STATE THROUGH HER WORK IN EDUCATION AND TO WISH HER MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, the education of South Carolina's young people is of utmost importance to this General Assembly and to the citizens of this State; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements of those incredible individuals who have dedicated their lives to improving South Carolina's schools and promoting the need for academic excellence in today's society; and

Whereas, Doris D. Cole, Ph. D. of Williamston received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Columbia College, completing her degree in only three years. She received her Masters of Education from Clemson University in 1988, and in 1992, she received an Education Specialist Degree from Clemson. She completed her academic career in 1995 when she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership from Clemson; and

Whereas, Dr. Cole is the current Principal of Whitehall Elementary School in Anderson and has devoted her professional career to enhancing education at many schools in this State; and

Whereas, since 1975, she has been an educator, beginning her career as a ninth and twelfth grade English teacher at Piedmont High School. She was then an eighth grade language arts teacher at Wren Middle School, and she was also an adult education teacher for several years in the Anderson One and Two Career Center; and

Whereas, from 1988 until 1992, she was the director of the Anderson One Child Development Center, and in 1992, she began her administrative career as the Principal of West Pelzer Primary School; and

Whereas, Dr. Cole then became the Director of Elementary and Middle School Education for Anderson School District Five, and finally she became the Principal at Whitehall Elementary School; and

Whereas, Dr. Cole's expertise and influence has helped the schools in which she has been involved to accomplish major achievements, including the Anderson District One Child Development Center receiving the Regional Award for the Third Congressional District in the Palmetto's Finest competition; West Pelzer Primary School receiving $44,000 because of a grant writing program initiated by Dr. Cole; West Pelzer Primary School receiving three incentive awards; the schools in Anderson School District Five receiving Schools of Promise Flagship recognition and SACS accreditation; and Whitehall Elementary School receiving the Red Carpet Award, being a finalist for the Exemplary Writing Award, and being one of two elementary schools in Anderson District Five to meet federal Annual Yearly Progress in math and reading; and

Whereas, Dr. Cole has also been involved in many organizations across the State and nation, including the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the South Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the South Carolina Network for Women Administrators in Education, the International Reading Association, Laubach Literacy International, and the National Association for the Education of Young Children; and

Whereas, Dr. Cole's individual honors include the 2000 Anderson Meals on Wheels Appreciation Award, the 1989 Williamston YMCA Founding President Appreciation Award, the 1988 Foothills Council of the International Reading Association's Celebrate Literacy Award, the 1987 Pelzer Lions Club Citizen of the Year Award, and the 1985 Williamston Lions Club Citizen of the Year Award; and

Whereas, Dr. Cole will be deeply missed at Whitehall Elementary School and in the public education system of the State of South Carolina upon her retirement. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly extend their appreciation to Doris D. Cole, Ph. D. of Williamston, South Carolina, in Anderson County, on the occasion of her retirement as Principal of Whitehall Elementary School, for her many years of service to this State through her work in education and wish her much success and happiness in her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Doris D. Cole, Ph. D. of Williamston.
