Whereas, Reverend John Richard "Dick" Lincoln has been the pastor at Shandon Baptist Church in Columbia for twenty-five years, during which his special blend of unique pastoral skills, deep faith, and love of humankind has led Shandon Baptist Church to extraordinary growth and stature in the community; and

Whereas, born in Jamestown, New York and moving to Florida at age four, Reverend Lincoln had dreams of becoming a doctor, like his late father, or perhaps a lawyer; and

Whereas, while at the University of South Florida Reverend Lincoln received the call to serve the Lord, and following that call, he went to Southwestern Seminary, a Southern Baptist School in Fort Worth, Texas; and

Whereas, Reverend Lincoln became the pastor of a small, twenty-member church in Purmilla, Texas while still in school and it was here that he embarked on his journey as a pastor; and

Whereas, five years later, members of the Shandon Baptist Church approached Reverend Lincoln while he was the pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Lilburn, Georgia and asked him to be the new pastor at Shandon Baptist Church; and

Whereas, Reverend Lincoln and his wife, Patty, and their two children, Stephen and Elizabeth, made the transition to Shandon Baptist Church in 1978, forming a bond of love and devotion with both the congregation and the community; and

Whereas, before Reverend Lincoln came to Shandon Baptist Church, the church had approximately seven hundred members and was operating out of a smaller sanctuary on Woodrow Street in the Shandon neighborhood; and

Whereas, in his twenty-five years with Shandon Baptist Church, membership has grown to over five thousand members, and the church has moved to a beautiful modern worship center, reaching a diverse congregation by offering both traditional and contemporary worship services; and

Whereas, Shandon Baptist Church serves the spiritual needs of all ages providing, among many other programs, a child-care center and programs for youth, singles, and seniors, as well as local and worldwide ministry programs; and

Whereas, Reverend Lincoln is renowned as a teacher of the Gospel, a pastoral counselor of infinite wisdom and compassion, and a man of extraordinary vision. Through his ministry he has reached tens of thousands of people and is a beloved and greatly admired preacher, not only in his own congregation but also in the larger Baptist community and throughout South Carolina; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are very pleased to recognize such a dedicated, talented, and distinguished religious leader as the Reverend Richard "Dick" Lincoln. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Reverend John Richard "Dick" Lincoln on his outstanding leadership and extraordinary ministry throughout his twenty-five years as pastor of Shandon Baptist Church in Columbia and extend best wishes to Reverend Lincoln in all of his future endeavors.
