A HOUSE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE CAROLINA PANTHERS ON THEIR 14-3 NFC TITLE WIN OVER THE HEAVILY FAVORED PHILADELPHIA EAGLES AND PLEDGING THEM THE STEADFAST SUPPORT OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AS THEY FACE THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS IN SUPER BOWL XXXVIII.

Whereas, the Carolina Panthers rebounded only two years after a hapless 1-15 season to take the 2003 National Football Conference crown in a 14-3 victory on the Philadelphia Eagles' home field under frigid playing conditions; and

Whereas, that hard-fought win propelled the Panther team to a 14-5 record and a slot in Super Bowl XXXVIII Sunday, February 1, 2004, against the 16-2 New England Patriots; and

Whereas, this year's Super Bowl matchup pits the Panthers, in their first NFL championship game in their nine-year franchise history, against the 2001 Super Bowl champs, making their second title appearance in three years; and

Whereas, the Panthers and Coach John Fox have built their successful season around the cornerstones of enthusiasm and hard work, resulting in a hard-nosed defense that combined for five sacks and four interceptions and a relentless run-first offense that executed almost twice as many running plays as the Eagles in an otherwise statistically even NFC showdown; and

Whereas, the classic Super Bowl pairing of the upstart Panthers and the veteran former champions is just the final chapter in Carolina's miraculous comeback season; and

Whereas, the citizens of South Carolina are excited to express pride in their Panthers' outstanding season and support of their Panthers as they travel to Houston seeking to cap the 2003 campaign with the Super Bowl crown. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives do hereby congratulate the Carolina Panthers on their 14-3 NFC title win over the heavily favored Philadelphia Eagles and pledge them the steadfast support of the State of South Carolina as they face the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and Coach John Fox on behalf of the team.
