A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE MRS. FLORENCE G. FOXWORTH OF MARION FOR HER DEDICATION AS A PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHER FOR MORE THAN FIVE DECADES AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HER IN ALL OF HER FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Mrs. Florence G. Foxworth of Marion, South Carolina, has been a public school teacher for more than five decades, and she has been involved in numerous civic and community activities which affirmed her dedication to fulfilling special education needs of challenged public school students; and

Whereas, born and raised in Mullins, South Carolina, Mrs. Foxworth was the daughter of the late Mr. McKinley Gerald and Mrs. Rosa Gerald of Mullins and she was the oldest of four siblings; and

Whereas, growing up in the Effingham Baptist Church, Mrs. Foxworth later joined the St. John A.M.E. Church of Marion where she is currently actively involved in the church activities; and

Whereas, the widow of the late Mr. Lamar Foxworth, Sr., Mrs. Foxworth has two children, a daughter, Cheryl Foxworth-Connor and a son, Lamar Foxworth, Jr., both of Marion; and

Whereas, after graduating from Palmetto High School in Mullins, Mrs. Foxworth earned a degree in Elementary Education from Benedict College and subsequently earned a Masters degree in Special Education from North Carolina's Central University in Durham; and

Whereas, upon completion of her education, Mrs. Foxworth began teaching public school in 1951, and throughout her fifty-three years of teaching in Mullins School District 37, she has won numerous awards and recognition such as the Teacher of the Year Award at Mullins High School and the Marion County NAACP's Woman of the Year; and

Whereas, named second runner-up for the South Carolina NAACP's Woman of the Year Award, Mrs. Foxworth is also a Golden Apple Award recipient for her work with special needs children and she has been featured in Jet Magazine; and

Whereas, along with her dedication and commitment to the public school system, Mrs. Foxworth is also heavily involved in the community as well, volunteering with the ALS Association, serving on the Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, and reading to nursing home patients; and

Whereas, a member of the Omicron-Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Mrs. Foxworth is also a volunteer for voter registration in Marion County and a member of the South Carolina Democratic Women's Council, the Marion County Democratic Party, and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare; and

Whereas, serving on the committee for the restoration of Old Marion High School and the Revitalization Committee for the All-American City for Marion, Mrs. Foxworth also gives her time to the National Council of Negro Women and the Palmetto Black Caucus; and

Whereas, in addition to inspiring thousands of students of all races, backgrounds, and beliefs to enhance the quality of life for all members of society, Mrs. Foxworth also recognizes that children with special needs afford our community with our greatest educational challenges and she works hard to ensure their place in society; and

Whereas, having served fifty-three years in the South Carolina public school system, Mrs. Foxworth has not only been an invaluable asset to Mullins High School, but she is one of the finest mentors the Palmetto State has to offer, and we are grateful to be given the opportunity to thank this great woman. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly honor and recognize Mrs. Florence G. Foxworth of Marion for her dedication as a public school teacher for more than five decades and extend best wishes to her in all of her future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Florence G. Foxworth of Marion.
