A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE TO MISS JESSICA GIBBONS OF GREER ON BEING NAMED ONE OF THE TOP TWO VOLUNTEERS OF SOUTH CAROLINA IN THE EIGHTH ANNUAL PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS PROGRAM.

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize young people in this State who are dedicated to giving their time and energy to helping build a sense of togetherness among the people of their communities; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina is blessed to have among its citizens a young woman with a caring heart and a creative mind who has devoted many hours to volunteering; and

Whereas, Miss Jessica Gibbons, 18, of Greer and a senior at Greer High School, most recently used her leadership abilities and organizational skills to begin a musical service and potluck supper to promote camaraderie and acceptance between members of her church and a neighboring African-American church; and

Whereas, the event was a tremendous success and the two groups are planning an even larger celebration for the Spring of 2004; and

Whereas, Miss Gibbons has been recognized both locally and nationally for her volunteer efforts and for her hard work and steadfast commitment to this particular project; and

Whereas, most recently, Miss Gibbons was named as one of South Carolina's top two youth volunteers in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program, a joint project by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals which recognizes young people across the nation for outstanding community service; and

Whereas, as a state honoree, Miss Gibbons is given the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., for a chance to receive the prestigious award of being named a national honoree; and

Whereas, the people of Greer and of the State of South Carolina are extremely fortunate to have such an influential citizen willing to help bridge racial gaps and to promote cultural awareness and appreciation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, wish to extend their most sincere congratulations to Miss Jessica Gibbons of Greer on being named one of the top two volunteers of South Carolina in the eighth annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Miss Jessica Gibbons of Greer.
