A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO REVEREND KENNETH HODGES AND THE MEMBERS OF TABERNACLE BAPTIST CHURCH IN BEAUFORT ON THE OCCASION OF THE CELEBRATION OF THE CHURCH'S 140th ANNIVERSARY.

Whereas, churches in this State provide encouragement and support to their members and promote the spiritual growth of their congregations through Bible lessons, songs of praise, and other ministerial work; and

Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the invaluable work of ministers and members of churches in teaching religion and advocating for peace among all people; and

Whereas, for 140 years, Tabernacle Baptist Church of Beaufort has been dedicated and has generously given to the local community and is held in high regard by the residents of the area and across the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, it was built as a white Baptist church in 1811, Tabernacle Baptist Church changed to an African-American congregation after the Civil War and claims 1863 as the year of its establishment. The church's first pastor, Reverend Solomon Peck, led the congregation of 5,500 members for only one year before he was called to another kind of ministry with the Home Mission Society; and

Whereas, only moderate reconstruction has been performed on the church since its inception, and the beautiful, old building sits on Craven Street and has been studied and researched by authors and reporters for many years; and

Whereas, the church is best known for its wonderful music performed by its talented choir and years of inspirational teachings by its outstanding ministers, including Reverend A.B. White, Reverend Peter White, Reverend Renty F. Blythewood, Reverend Daniel W. Blythewood, Reverend George McLemore, Sr., Reverend Addison E. Quick, Reverend T. Lloyd Hickman, Reverend Edward Cornwell, Sr., Reverend Clarence Barnes, Sr., Reverend Colins C. Boyd, Reverend Saby J. Gaillard, Reverend Phillip C. Dawley, Reverend Mack E. Sharpe, and Reverend Dan R. Bodison; and

Whereas, this year, Tabernacle Baptist Church is celebrating 140 years of service and ministry to the Beaufort community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, extend their congratulations to Reverend Kenneth Hodges and the members of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Beaufort on the occasion of the celebration of the church's 140th anniversary.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Reverend Kenneth Hodges and the members of Tabernacle Baptist Church of Beaufort.
