TO INVITE THE NATIONAL COMMANDER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION, THE HONORABLE JOHN A. BRIEDEN, III, TO ADDRESS THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY IN JOINT SESSION AT 12:30 P.M. ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2004.
Whereas, the Honorable John A. Brieden, III, was elected National Commander of the 2.8 million member American Legion on August 28, 2003, in St. Louis, Missouri, during the 85th National Convention of the nation's largest veterans' organization; and
Whereas, the Honorable John A. Brieden, III, after serving as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army from 1972 to 1977, became a member of the American Legion in 1979 and served in numerous positions within the American Legion for twenty-five years; and
Whereas, he dedicated himself to the service of other veterans and their families for more than twenty five years by holding numerous offices at the post, district, state, and national levels of the American Legion, including Chairman of the National Legislative Commission, Chairman of the National Economic Commission, Chairman of the National Foreign Relations Commission, and Chairman of the National Americanism Council; and
Whereas, the Honorable John A. Brieden, III, spent his career in the insurance business where he earned the professional designation Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow and where he was named the Central Texas Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Man of the Year in 1993; and
Whereas, he has served as a member of Congressman Kevin Brady's Military Academy Selection Committee and he was appointed by the Texas Governor in 1998 to the Texas Veterans Commission and served a term as Secretary of that commission in 2000 and 2001; and
Whereas, he married the former Terry Weaver Dial and they are the parents of four children and the grandparents of five grandchildren. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the National Commander of the American Legion, the Honorable John A. Brieden, III, is invited to address the South Carolina General Assembly in Joint Session in the Chamber of the House of Representatives at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2004.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable John A. Brieden, III.
