A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE OVERPASS THAT CROSSES SPANISH WELLS ROAD ALONG THE CROSS ISLAND PARKWAY ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND THE "AMBASSADOR JOHN C. WEST OVERPASS" AND TO ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS OVERPASS WHICH CONTAIN THE WORDS "AMBASSADOR JOHN C. WEST OVERPASS".

Whereas, the Honorable John C. West was born on August 27, 1922, in Camden, South Carolina; and

Whereas, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Citadel in 1942 and graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1948; and

Whereas, Governor West served this country as a Major in the United States Army; and

Whereas, from 1954-1966 he served in the South Carolina Senate; and

Whereas, from 1966-1970 he was the Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina; and

Whereas, from 1971-1975 he served as Governor of South Carolina; and

Whereas, in 1977 he was appointed United States Ambassador to Saudi Arabia by former President Jimmy Carter; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly believe that is fitting and proper to recognize this distinguished son of the Palmetto State by naming the overpass that crosses Spanish Wells Road along the Cross Island Parkway on Hilton Head Island in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request the Department of Transportation name the overpass that crosses Spanish Wells Road along the Cross Island Parkway on Hilton Head Island the "Ambassador John C. West Overpass" and to erect appropriate markers or signs at this overpass containing the words "Ambassador John C. West Overpass".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
