A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 59-18-700, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE CRITERIA FOR THE ADOPTION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS FOR THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, SO AS TO REVISE THIS CRITERIA BY PROVIDING THAT ALL INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS PLACED ON THE APPROVED LIST OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND TEXTBOOKS FOR USE IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF THIS STATE SHALL CONTAIN THE SUBSTANCE AND LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE OUTLINED IN THE GRADE AND SUBJECT SPECIFIC ACADEMIC STANDARDS ADOPTED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION; BY ADDING SECTION 59-18-705 SO AS TO CREATE THE SOUTH CAROLINA SCIENCE COMMITTEE AND PROVIDE FOR ITS MEMBERSHIP AND DUTIES; AND TO REPEAL SECTION 59-31-45, RELATING TO THE SELECTION OF TEXTBOOKS.

Amend Title To Conform

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Section 59-18-700 of the 1976 Code, as added by Act 400 of 1998, is amended to read:

"Section 59-18-700.    The criteria governing the adoption of All instructional materials shall be revised by the State Board of Education to require that placed on the approved list of instructional materials and textbooks for use in the public schools of this State pursuant to State Board of Education regulations the content of such materials reflect shall contain the substance and level of performance outlined in the grade and subject specific educational academic standards adopted by the state board State Board of Education."

SECTION    2.    Section 59-31-45 of the 1976 Code is repealed.

SECTION    3.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
