TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF DR. JOSEPH M. STILL, JR., AND TO EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY, MANY FRIENDS, AND COLLEAGUES.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened by the news of the death of Dr. Joseph M. Still, Jr., on February 1, 2006; and

Whereas, born on July 25, 1938 in Charlotte, North Carolina, Dr. Still did more with his sixty-seven short years on this earth than most can even dream of achieving; and

Whereas, earning degrees in biology and chemistry from Shorter College, Dr. Still went on to receive his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed residencies in general surgery at the Medical College of Georgia and in plastic surgery at Duke University Medical Center; and

Whereas, a loving and devoted family man, Dr. Still enjoyed a wonderful, fruitful marriage with Susan H. Still and was adored by his ten children and seventeen grandchildren; and

Whereas, embodying a true passion for healing burn victims, Dr. Still, a groundbreaking plastic and wound surgeon, founded the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors' Hospital in Augusta, Georgia in 1978. Starting the center when he encountered a burn patient whom no existing center would take because he had no insurance, Dr. Still and his fifty-eight bed center now serve over 2000 patients a year from across the Southeast; and

Whereas, often employing experimental procedures and creating new techniques for treating patients, Dr. Still confronted each challenge with both confidence and compassion. He was one of the first plastic surgeons to ever use cultured skin and other materials, such as those derived from shark cartilage, in his work; and

Whereas, throughout his long and distinguished career, Dr. Still published and lectured extensively, most particularly in the area of treating burn patients, and was renowned in his field and beloved by his patients and all who knew him; and

Whereas, Dr. Still's extraordinary generosity and charitable deeds were numerous and varied and will not soon be forgotten, as he traveled to foreign countries to treat burn victims, put countless students through college, and even ran a massive bird sanctuary with his wife; and

Whereas, South Carolinians are humbled to have benefited from the short, but truly amazing life of Dr. Joseph Still, and though he is already greatly missed, the members of the South Carolina Senate are certain that his legacy will live on in the lives of all whom he touched. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Dr. Joseph M. Still, Jr., and express the deepest sympathy to his family, many friends, and colleagues.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Joseph Still's wife, Mrs. Susan H. Still.
