A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF AND THE BLIND AREA 12 SPECIAL OLYMPICS SOCCER TEAM AND AREA 12 SPECIAL OLYMPICS GYMNASTS FOR WINNING GOLD MEDALS, AND WISHING THEM MUCH SUCCESS AS THEY COMPETE AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL THIS SUMMER IN AMES, IOWA.

Whereas, the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind was founded in 1849 by Reverend Newton Pinckney Walker who considered physical activity an important aspect of learning and overall development; and

Whereas, the Special Olympics is the athletic program for the Division for the Multihandicapped at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind; and

Whereas, the program encompasses ten different sports, is an excellent motivator, and sports training program; and

Whereas, the soccer team, composed of Loman Brooks of Sumter, Steven Campbell of Spartanburg, Ronnie Eubanks of Laurens, Chris Fowler of Greenville, Marvin Hampton of Summerton, Mitchell Heriot of Sumter, Kenneth Johnson of Georgetown, Antonio Nixon of North Charleston, and Buck Woodall of Spartanburg, took the gold medal in the South Carolina state competition and will now compete in the national competition in the Summer of 2006 in Ames, Iowa; and

Whereas, two of the school's gymnasts were also able to attain gold. Elizabeth Berg of Spartanburg won five gold medals, and Neal Ellis of Lancaster won two gold medals and five silver medals. Both will go on to compete at the national level this summer in Ames, Iowa; and

Whereas, these two teams were successful thanks to the outstanding coaching, both on and off the field, by Mr. Joe Johnson, Mr. Kevin Russell, and Ms. Kim Speer. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind Area 12 Special Olympics soccer team and Area 12 Special Olympics gymnasts on their gold medals, and wish them much success as they compete at the national level this summer in Ames, Iowa.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind.
