A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND DR. CHARLES GAINES, ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST RESPECTED MUSIC TEACHERS AND DIRECTORS, FOR A LIFETIME OF MUSICAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS, FOR EDUCATING AND NURTURING SO MANY YOUNG STUDENTS, AND FOR BRINGING JOY TO AUDIENCES THROUGHOUT OUR STATE AND ABROAD.

Whereas, Dr. Charles Gaines has brought music to Laurens County for over forty years as professor of music at Presbyterian College while at the same time serving as a church organist, pianist, music director, and consultant for a number of local churches and organizations; and

Whereas, he served for thirty-three years on the faculty of Presbyterian College, was a Charles A. Dana Professor of Music, and spread the joy of music and the name of Presbyterian College from the New York television stage to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome; and

Whereas, his leadership at Presbyterian college included directing the choir, which performed at a fall concert, at the Madrigal Dinner Concerts at Christmas, in a Broadway Cabaret, and on a Spring Break Tour Concert. Dr. Gaines took one of the first groups from Presbyterian College abroad when the choir sang in Bethlehem Square on Christmas Eve and toured Israel in the early seventies; and

Whereas, Dr. Gaines retired from Presbyterian College in 1998 but continues to teach, adjudicate, consult, and substitute for many directors and musicians in the area; and

Whereas, Dr. Gaines has acted as adjudicator and consultant to amateur and professional music groups, and is the artistic director and founder of the Laurens County Chorale and the Greenwood Festival Chorale. He is also a past president of the South Carolina Music Teachers Association, and was voted Citizen of the Year by the local Lions Club; and

Whereas, this amazing and talented man has dedicated his life to the education and mentoring of young people not only for his own three children and eight grandchildren but for hundreds of college students, choir members, chorale performers; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate of South Carolina, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and honor this truly outstanding man for all he has done during a distinguished career to bring pleasure to so many South Carolinians through the gift of music. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate, by this resolution, recognize and commend Dr. Charles Gaines, one of South Carolina's most respected music teachers and directors, for a lifetime of musical accomplishments, for educating and nurturing so many young students, and for bringing joy to audiences throughout our State and abroad.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Charles Gaines.
