TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF LILLIE RUTH WARREN OWENS, AND TO EXTEND TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate was deeply saddened by news of the death of Lillie Ruth Warren Owens on May 16, 2006; and

Whereas, born to her loving parents N.W. and Elizabeth Warren on December 20, 1909 in Smoaks, South Carolina, Mrs. Owens tragically lost her mother at the age of fourteen months and her father eight years later; and

Whereas, Mrs. Owens was blessed to live under the patient, abiding care of her grandmother for the majority of her teen years and into her adult life; and

Whereas, attending Branchville public schools and graduating from Lockett High School, she received post-secondary training in elementary education from South Carolina State University and started her teaching career at Dorchester Elementary School, later transferring to Branchville Elementary School; and

Whereas, her romance and courtship with the late Bennie C. Owens led to their marriage in 1933. A loving wife and mother, Mrs. Owens devoted herself to her husband and seven children: Bennie and twins Gerald and Geneva, who all died in infancy, and Mattie, Ruth Carolyn, and twins Willie B. and Sammie G.; and

Whereas, Mrs. Owens tragically laid her husband to rest in 1949, and determinedly went on to rear her children with great love, respect, and honor on her own; and

Whereas, over the years Mrs. Owens' family grew and grew, and she leaves twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren with many happy memories and life lessons regarding the importance of education that they will carry with them forever; and

Whereas, an active supporter of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's, she was the chief plaintiff in a civil action filed in federal court against the City of Orangeburg demanding representation for minorities on City Council; and

Whereas, Mrs. Owens remained the faithful office nurse for Dr. Disher for over forty years, and her talent and dedication to her work are not easy to replace; and

Whereas, living her life by her favorite scripture verse that reminded her that she had "never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread", Mrs. Owens persevered through times of sadness and struggle to provide for herself and her family; and

Whereas, though her family and friends still grieve their loss, the memory of Lillie Ruth Warren Owens will live on in the minds and hearts of all who knew her, and the sacrifices she made on behalf of others will not soon be forgotten. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Lillie Ruth Warren Owens and extend her family and many friends the deepest sympathy.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Willie B. Owens.
