A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MOST WORSHIPFUL GRAND MASTER, THE HONORABLE ALONZO HAYNES, OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, FOR HIS EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY, AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR ALL OF HIS GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PART OF HIS EXTENSIVE INVOLVEMENT IN THE COMMUNITY.

Whereas, the Honorable Alonzo Haynes has accomplished many great things throughout his life by serving his family and his community and providing valuable leadership skills to help complete many important projects throughout the community, State, and country; and

Whereas, he has lived his entire life following his motto of "wisdom" and setting examples for all to follow with his "leadership"; and

Whereas, Brother Haynes was born in Charleston as the youngest of three sons of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel S. Haynes; and

Whereas, he graduated from Bonds-Wilson High School before joining the United States Army, where he served in the Vietnam War as a Teletype and Switchboard Communication Specialist before being honorably discharged; and

Whereas, as an intelligent, marketable worker, Brother Haynes was employed by several firms in the Charleston area, including REA Express Company and Lockheed of Georgia Aircraft Company, for which he was instrumental in the designing of the C-130, C-5, C-141, and L1011 Aircraft; and

Whereas, while working at Lockheed, he enrolled at Southeastern Business College to further his education, and in 1973, he was welcomed aboard at CSX Railroad Company as Conductor-Foreman, from which he retired in 1996, after twenty-three years of dedicated service; and

Whereas, a devoted husband to the former Miss Sandra J. Whitney, Brother Haynes is the proud father of Alonzo Michael, Sheryl, and Terri; and

Whereas, strong in his faith, he is a member of Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he is the Leader of Class Number 31, a member of the male choir, and past member of the Senior Trustee Board; and

Whereas, sincerely committed to the preservation of his community, Brother Haynes, as a holder of a Black Belt in the Martial Art of Judo, has worked with the youth of the community by teaching this art to many of them at the YMCA, YWCA, and other organizations, and as a member of the Accabee Athletic Club, he helped to reestablish little league baseball for boys and a softball league for girls; and

Whereas, his dedication to civic duties also has led him to be one of the founders of the "Strong Holder Association", which is a group of men who work with young males to help improve their self-esteem so that they develop a positive outlook on life. Brother Haynes is also a member of the NAACP; and

Whereas, a zealous member and active leader of the Masonic Lodge at all levels, Brother Haynes is Past Master of Nehemiah Lodge No. 51, F and A.M. - P.H.A.; Past High Priest, Robert B. Elliot, Chapter No. 1, Holy Royal Masons, P.H.A.; Past Officer John E. Dowling Commandry, Knights Templar, P.H.A.; Grand Inspector General Thirty-Third Degree; George Washington Carver Consistory No. 162, P.H.A.; past Potentate of Arabian Temple No. 139, Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles Mystic Shrine North and South America and its Jurisdiction, Inc., P.H.A.; and a member of Poinsetta Chapter Number 129 O.E.S.; and

Whereas, he is the Past District Deputy for the First Masonic District at the district level, and he is one of the Past Right Worshipful Grand Deputy Lecturer and Past Right Worshipful Grand Trustee at the state level, where he served as the Right Worshipful Grand Senior Warden, Deputy Grand Master, and currently serves as the twenty-second Most Worshipful Grand Master for the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for South Carolina; and

Whereas, nationally involved with the Masonic Lodge, Brother Haynes is an Imperial Officer, and in 1990-91, he organized and established a working and supported agreement between temples and courts throughout New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina; and

Whereas, appreciated dearly by everyone around him, Brother Haynes has received many awards and honors for his numerous accomplishments and contributions, including the most outstanding award presented to him, the 1991 "Superior Performance Award". Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor The Most Worshipful Grand Master, the Honorable Alonzo Haynes, of Charleston County, for his exceptional leadership and service to the community and commend him for all of his great accomplishments as part of his extensive involvement in the community.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable Alonzo Haynes.
